Description
We’re very excited to offer powder-cut, or moida fina, mate for the first time! This style of mate is popular in southern Brazil where it is referred to as chimarrão.
This is the 2019 harvest of the Gehm family’s fantastic ‘Moonshine’ craft mate, a truly premium product. It is available in 500g packs or 100g sample packs, both vacuum-packed for freshness.
Based in Sede Nova, southern Brazil, The Gehm family have been producing artisan Yerba Mate for 3 generations. They harvest the leaves under the full moon from trees grown in their own forests. Harvesting in this way does not damage the trees and maintains the biodiversity that monoculture crops are so rapidly destroying in many areas of South America.
Mate producers take pride in their individual techniques, resulting in each mate having its own characteristic flavour. The Gehm family have a slightly larger infrastructure than many other small producers, but they maintain traditional methods. The sapeco (the process of briefly exposing freshly harvested Yerba Mate leaves to flames) is done manually in a metal drum, and the drying process takes places in the Gehm’s new hand-built barbacua, using aromatic woods.
The result is a wonderful chimarrão, fresh and complex with rich smoky notes.
If you’re looking for high-quality craft mate which supports small artisanal farmers and their traditional methods, then this is the product for you.
Preparation:
As it it powder-cut, this craft chimarrão is best prepared in the traditional manner using a cuia and bomba. For instructions on how to do this, click here.
