What is a bombilla?

A bombilla is a straw with a perforated end which is used to drink Mate tea from a gourd. Originally made of bamboo, they are now most commonly made of stainless steel or other metals.

The Brazilian name for a bombilla is a bomba. Brazilian bombas tend to have larger, circular filtered ends, while bombillas in Argentina and elsewhere are narrower at the end.

If you’re serious about Mate, it’s worth investing in a decent bombilla. Low-quality ones may be cheap, but they are prone to clogging and the thinner metal makes burning your lips much more likely.
